Germany has voted: What next for Europe?
The German snap federal election occurs amidst a backdrop of overlapping crises and significant geopolitical shifts. Trump 2.0 reshapes political, economic, and security dynamics in Europe and Asia. Russia continues to pose an escalating threat to NATO. Across the EU, radical populist parties are increasing their representation in governments. Meanwhile, the climate crisis remains an unrelenting challenge. At the EU level, political deadlock in Berlin has already had far-reaching consequences. The so-called "German vote" – frequent abstentions due to coalition divisions – has stalled decision-making on key European policies. Meanwhile, recent Bundestag votes on migration policy, where CDU/CSU proposals passed only with the support of the AfD and FDP, have raised concerns about Germany’s role in the EU. All eyes on Germany: What will the new political constellation mean for European unity, the EU’s decarbonisation and competitiveness agenda, and the EU’s role in the world? The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union office in Brussels invites you to analyse the election results and their implications for Germany’s role in Europe.
